Emma Argues with Principal Figgins is the fictional comedy-drama series “Glee.” Glee is a series based on the high school experience, Emma Pillsbury’s debate with Principal Figgins, romance mixed with social issues, family relations, relationships, the Glee Club, and teamwork. Glee is a web series with the main fictional characters Emma and Figgins. The Glee series aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015.

Emma Pillsbury played the role of guidance consul at William McKinley High School. Glee is a series about the young dropout students who joined the ‘Glee Club’ to achieve something in their lives. Emma Pillsbury, the character, was portrayed by actress Jyma Mays. Jyma Mays is an American actress popular for her work in various movies and web series like Paul Blart, Epic, and many others.

The strict principal

Principal Figgins played the role of Head of William McKinley High School. Principal Figgins is a character who follows his mind. He was a very disciplined character and wanted everyone to follow the rules and regulations he set to be followed. He wanted his high school to be recognized but had no empathy for the dropout students. Iqbal Theba portrayed Principal Figgins. Iqbal is a Pakistani actor who now works in the Hollywood film industry and is known for his work in Illegal, Land of Gold, and Figgins.

Emma and Principal Figgins is characterised as two different poles of magnets

Emma’s character is depicted as someone with a soft heart and lots of emotions for others, someone who is concerned about others’ feelings as well; in contrast with Emma’s character is Principal Figgins, who is someone of reserved character, who is limited in his emotions and approach in life and wants others to be of same nature. Emma is a counselor who treats students with love, care, affection, and concern, while Principal Figgins ensures everyone follows his rules, regulations, and strict discipline protocols. The Glee web series became very popular on the OTT platforms because of the debate between Emma and Principal Figgins about the dropout students.

What caused the confrontation?

The confrontation resulted from continuous small disagreements between Emma and Principal Figgins. Emma advocated for students’ rights and actively participated in school decisions. On the other hand, Principal Figgins was a character who liked things to be reserved the way they were, without any changes. Because of this, these two never get along, and their contrasting character was the root cause of their disagreement that turned into a heated dispute one day.

Many school policies challenged Emma over the years, from dress codes to curriculum choices; however, cutting arts funding proved to be the tipping point of the volcano that erupted out of Emma’s controlling mouth.

Nevertheless, the arts were vital to Emma and many others, providing them a place to express themselves and their creativity, which they could not compromise. According to principal Figgins, arts are important but not as important as academic subjects like maths and science.

Opinion of Others

School community members were divided, too, after the confrontation. In response to the funding cuts, numerous students supported Emma, who organized petitions and held protests.

Conclusion

The school board proposed A mediation session between Emma, Principal Figgins, and other stakeholders to defuse the situation and reach a safe end. A compromise was finally reached following several intense sessions between them. The conclusion reached was a compromise that considered the reasonable points of both parties. The cut in the arts session was proposed, however not a significant as was proposed earlier. 

The idea behind the confrontation 

The confrontation depicted in the drama series was not a random thought of the creator. It carried the idea behind it as well. The confrontation depicted the power of the youth and women and the need to move along with the changing times. Being stuck with old ideas and techniques may cause hindrance to full development in the present and future. One needs to be adjustable with one’s ideas and approach in life to find the best suitable opportunity in a difficult situation.
